I am from Tulsa Ok. and grew up in Sand Springs.
Who are you outside Eclipse?
First and foremost I am a father to two of the best kids a father could ask for, and husband to the best wife anyone could marry. We are hard working in personal and play life. We like to build houses, ride four wheelers, boat, tube, water ski, snowboard, hike,etc. We like to enjoy life. I work in a manufacturing facility that produces parts for all industries including aerospace, infrastructure, energy and medical. Our website is www.hpmfgusa.com.
When did you first start training at CrossFit Eclipse?
Approximately, 7 years ago Aaron Schupp started wooing me to come and train with him on days that he wanted to work mid back only. That blossomed into a full on Eclipse experience that I could not have envisioned. The reality of the Eclipse gym is that the coaches are focused on mind and body. The mind is eased by knowing that they will take care of you like family in order to take care of the body in the workout.
What is your sports & fitness background?
My sports background has evolved like most of us. I played high school football poorly. I transitioned into boxing over with Cecil Pettigrew, did a little bodybuilding and found a niche I enjoyed in Strongman. I competed across the middle of the USA at different Strongman events in the early days of the sport. I had the privilege of training with a few of the guys who ended up on the MetRx World Strongest Man contest. Being in that sport is what drew me to Eclipse. I enjoy functional strength training. Strongman was that and Eclipse has helped me continue to enjoy functional strength with our the massive weights required for the Strongman sport.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?
My body and health have always been drivers for what I want to do. I believe in the idea of performance in day to day activities is what drives us all as adults. I want to be able to do whatever I or my kids want me to do. Functional strength is what allows us to have the ability to stay active later in life. Eclipse has allowed me to lose weight and perform to the best of my abilities in life.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit Eclipse moments?
I have a few of my favorite moments that all tie together. In lifting, watching Grace do the Turkish Get Up with a fully loaded bar when she was competing was one of the most incredible feats of strength I have seen with my own 2 eyes. And that leads me to the moments I enjoy. I love watching people come into the gym and having no preconceived notions as to what they can or cannot accomplish. Many days I have been riding the assault bike and seen people from all walks of life accomplish incredible feats of strength without knowing that they should not be able to do that.
What goal are you currently working towards?
Currently I am working toward stringing 30 Double Unders together and being able to plant a handstand on the wall.
Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit?
My advice is for people to listen to the coaches, but more importantly communicate with the coaches. I see people come in all the time and tell our coaches that they need to modify for many different reasons. CFE coaches are some of the best I have ever seen at modifying for the individual. But they cannot modify if there is no communication from the athlete. Some days you may need to modify for soreness other times for injury. Let the coaches help you.
