Who are you outside Eclipse?
Husband to Stacy, dad of Sydney and Landon, and I work for AEP. I enjoy hanging out with the family, working on the house or a vehicle, or finding something else fun to do.
When did you first start training at CrossFit Eclipse?
March 10th, 2010 (yes, ten years ago)!
What is your sports & fitness background?
LOL, none really. I played soccer with my neighbor friends growing up as a kid, then in college I picked up rock climbing for several years and did that for a couple years early in my career. Shortly after I stopped climbing, I picked up mountain biking. I used that outlet as exercise for the next several years, then switched to CrossFit. I still occasionally ride, and intend to pick it up more as I think Landon would enjoy going more.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?
In 2010, I was the heaviest I’d ever been at almost 215 lbs. Getting out for rides was tough because I was now working further away from Turkey Mountain, so after Aaron and Josh talked about opening Eclipse, I decided to give it a try. After about 6 months with both increasing workout frequency and diet modifications, I had lost 40 lbs. I was pretty much hooked. Today I am stronger and healthier than I’ve ever been, and face athletic challenges without second thoughts. Many times before and shortly after starting CrossFit, I had issues with my knees, primarily due to the extra weight I was carrying around. My overall medical health has also changed drastically. I wasn’t taking any medications before starting, but I was on a path to needing them in the future from what my doctors had been telling me.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit Eclipse moments?
Wow, over 10 years, there has been a lot. The funny thing is, most of these moments happen outside the gym. Doing events together outside the gym, with the gym members, has been a big one. Komen race for the cure, Warrior Dash, Mud Run, competitions, outreach days. This continues as members go through things, Eclipse is there, and more than just a gym.
One favorite moment was when Landon turned 6. We were having a party for him with Bricks for Kids, and they were not in a permanent location, and after realizing this after we had booked them, and both Stacy and I could not locate the building they were giving use as the location for the party, we got concerned that no one would be able to find it. Somehow we got to discussing this with Aaron, and I’m not sure if we asked or he offered, but we had his party at Eclipse, and the Bricks for Kids came out to do it at the gym. It really made our day, and Landon’s party a success. If you look up to the ceiling to this day at the gym, you’ll see one of the deflated balloons hanging from one of the rafters. Moments like this have kept me coming back…for 10 years!
What goal are you currently working towards?
A longtime goal has been handstand walks…and perhaps the reason I haven’t mastered it yet, is because I don’t work on them, unless a workout calls for it…
Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit?
Be patient. That is probably the hardest thing to get over when starting, because everything is so exciting, you just want to be able to do everything. For me, I had some work to do, just to overcome the extra weight I had, and also to increase my flexibility to a point where I could use proper form for certain exercises. Both of those take time to overcome, but if you keep after them, you will succeed in time.
